Testing

At City Aikido, as at most aikido dojos, there are six levels of advancement prior to the black belt or ShoDan rank. Beginners enter the dojo at the level of 6th Kyu and advance at their own pace. The training days required for each level of advancement are minimums and are calculated as the number of days trained since the student’s last promotion.

Since everyone is unique in their abilities and training schedules, testing is offered as the student progresses naturally. Teachers and students work together collaboratively to determine the student’ s fulfillment of the requirements for each level.

The tests are designed for the students to demonstrate their proficiency of the techniques at their next level of development and to progressively show the embodiment of the principles of aiki.
